Everything You Need to Know About Ayurvedic Detox

Ayurveda is the Indian Medicinal System that is based on the ideology of extracting the disease from its roots. It does not separate the Physical, Mental, and Spiritual health. Ayurveda recommends regular detoxes that help the body get rid of the toxins, giving a healthy and happy mind and body.
Let us tell you how you can detox with the help of Ayurveda. Read on to know as this blog has all the details you need to know.
Before jumping straight on to the methods through which you can do Ayurvedic detox, let us first tell you what an Ayurvedic detox is.

What is Ayurvedic Detox?
According to Ayurveda, there are primarily five elements that form this world - Vayu (air), Prithvi (earth), Teja(fire), Aakash (space), and Jala (water). The combination of these elements forms the three energies that govern our inner and outer environments, namely, Kapha (movement), Pitta (Transformation), and Vata (structure). These energies are responsible for the characteristics of our mental and physical health. A fault in any of these energies leads to an imbalance that leads to various health issues.
To maintain a balance between the five elements and the three energies, Ayurvedic methods of detox are used.
Another thing that is important to understand is that your diet plays a vital role in maintaining harmony between the three energies. If there is a disturbance between the three energies, then you will have doshas. When you are undergoing an Ayurvedic detox, you should be careful of your diet. These doshas may require you to consume different diets, but there are some food items that should be completely avoided to stop any toxin formation in your body. These food items are - Alcohol, Red Meat, Processed food, Caffeine, and Artificial Sweeteners.
Ayurvedic Diet that is appropriate for each doshas can be personalised according to the health condition of an individual. Consulting a practitioner or expert is advisable.

How to have the best results of the detox?

  1. You should only consume water during the detox. Other than Water, Ginger Tea can also be consumed. Ginger is best to soothe the stomach.
  2. Drink the detox drink (Ginger Tea) before going to bed so that your bowels are all cleaned.
  3. Have your meals at exactly the same time each day.
  4. Massage after an Ayurvedic detox is recommended.
  5. You should also indulge yourself in meditation when you start the detox practises.

How long Does an Ayurvedic detox last?
Depending upon the Doshas of a person, the kind of detox he/she needs, and other important factors, an Ayurvedic detox can range anywhere from between 3-45 days.

How to do Ayurvedic detox?
Bodily detox in Ayurveda consists of two phases - Purvakarma and Panchakarma.
Purvakarma, or the practice that is done before the actual detox, is the phase in which the toxins are sent either to the surface of the skin or to the bowels from where they are excreted from the body. To do this, oil massages of the body, steaming practices, or Mind clarity through Oil dropping on the forehead is used.
After this preliminary phase, the practice of Panchakarma is used to push the toxins out of the body. Panchakarma literally means five karmas or treatment. They are -

  1. Basti - Massage using warm oil.
  2. Nasya - Nasal cleanse using oils, fumes or other remedies.
  3. Rakta Moksha - Blood Cleanse known as bloodletting.
  4. Vaman - Forced Vomiting through medicines.
  5. Virechan - Cleansing with the help of pastes, powders of herbs or medicinal plants.

Depending upon your doshas, you may undergo one or more of these detoxes.
Ayurvedic detox has been proved effective by the ones who have experienced it.
